Stop The Presses! The Wad Is Returned!!!

For some reason this bit of good news really thrilled me. So much so I almost want to drop to the floor a la Curly Howard and spin like a top. Instead I think I'll just post this update on Tuesday's post.

One of the local television stations, WRCB TV 3, reports:

Dalton Police say they have recovered the money lost at a gas station earlier this month.

According to officers, an envelope containing $917 was found at the Dalton Daily Citizen's office.

Investigators say there was a note saying this was the money taken at the gas station.

The money was turned over to police, who say the money will be returned to its rightful owner.

I'm so, so glad to be wrong on this one. I'm elated to learn this man who found the money and kept it for a week finally decided to do the right thing. He will sleep better at nights, I'm sure. I really never thought this man would come through. It took so long, but better late than never. Watching all the stories about bad people day after day after day, it sure is nice to have an opportunity to get the warm fuzzies for a change.

You know, Doug? I'll just bet he saw or heard of the story about the woman who lost it (and how she happened to have that cash) on the news and he knew it was a very important $917 to her. I am glad he turned it in. You know, if I had heard such a story on the news after picking up the money, I am sure I would have turned it in as well. Thanks for the update.

(But I thought this came from an old published article... what'd I miss?)

God made the person return the money, and don't you forget it. It wasn't fear of capture or good will on that person's part. We don't get channel 3 anymore, so I can't confirm that, personally. However I'm sure later news reports will confirm it. So glad that it was returned and that all of your Christian friends, who thought that keeping it was the right thing to do, have been shown up.

well I'm glad the deadbeat found a conscience and return the $. seems kind of cowardly to do so the way it was done. Was it me being confused, or did the original report say there was 950 lost, and only 917 returned? probably just me.
Although perhaps is better he did this the way he did vs coming forward and somehow ending up a "hero" for doing the right thing.
oh, and as for your other comment on the other post regarding it being "theft of mislaid funds" ok, maybe that would apply. I do know that if the gov't, a bank, or whoever sends you a check, such as a SS check or whatever and they make a mistake and say add way too many 0's and you spend the money, I've heard that you can be held liable and even owe penalties etc. That too is another case of people trying to take advantage. Somehow rationalizing that something is owed them.
I have been in stores checking out and been given too much change, the clerk handing me a extra bill or two, and I've always said something. However I am sure there are people who just pocket it and somehow believe that it is their due.
I saw Diane's comment on that post too, I think I was raised very similarly. if you end up with something that isn't yours you return it, on the other hand if you lose something, what has been ingrained in me by my parents was "well, someone must have needed it worse than you" type attitude.
Regarding a lot of this stuff, I'd like to believe that Karma will play a role. what goes around comes around.

Webster - I first saw the story a little over a week ago. I prefer to think he stewed on it and felt bad. Who knows, perhaps some of that holiday magic came over him. At any rate, it made me feel better.

GMM - You know, I certainly wish God would get more active in this sad, old world. I think some of my friends are giving this thing a second thought.

Day Dreamer - You are right about the totals. I caught that discrepancy too, and nothing was said about it in the reports. I'm guessing that $950 was the amount she borrowed and that perhaps she bought $43 worth of gas, and the balance was what she lost.

I got too much change back from a cashier a few years ago and walked back into the store to return it. The lady, who was rather young, laughed at me and told me she would have just kept it! Some people!

Diane - At least it did this time. And just in time for Christmas.
